Bear
03-21-2010, 07:25 PM
That would be Kenesaw Mountain Landis.

You are correct! Here is a little Landis History.

Kenesaw Mountain Landis
First Commissioner of Baseball
Elected: 1921-1944

Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis was elected baseball's first Commissioner on January 12, 1921. Born the sixth of seven children on November 20, 1866 in Milville, OH, Landis received his colorful name from Kennesaw Mountain, Georgia, where his father, Abraham Landis, had been seriously wounded during the Civil War. Ken, as he was called, was an avid baseball fan, and at age 17, he played on and managed the team in Logansport, IN, where he grew up.

Landis dropped out of Logansport High School and accepted a job as a clerk in the South Bend, IN, courthouse. He took pre-law courses at the University of Cincinnati and obtained a law degree at Union Law School, now Northwestern University, in Evanston, IL. He graduated in 1891 and opened a law practice in Chicago.

In March 1905, President Theodore Roosevelt appointed Landis a United States District Judge for the Northern District of Illinois, a position he held when offered the position of Baseball Commissioner.

While he often found time to attend games at both Comiskey Park and Wrigley Field in Chicago, Landis first became professionally involved with baseball in 1914, when he presided over the Federal League's injunction suit against the Major Leagues.

During his involvement with the suit, Landis spent considerable time studying baseball history. This, along with his background, made him a prime choice for Commissioner.

Landis was approached by the owners shortly after the 1919 World Series, when the "Black Sox" scandal ripped through baseball. Landis accepted the post on the condition that he keep his job as a judge and that his baseball salary ($50,000) be decreased by the amount he received as a judge ($7,500).

He exercised his authority frequently and to the fullest during his tenure. Determined to maintain the integrity of the game, he banned eight White Sox players involved in the scandal in one of his first acts as Commissioner.

Others banned during Landis' tenure as Commissioner included New York Giants outfielder Benny Kauff for theft and receiving stolen property (1921); Giants pitcher Phil Douglas for suggesting he would leave the club to make the Giants lose the pennant (1922); Giants rookie Jimmy O'Connell and coach Cozy Dolan for attempting to bribe an opposing player (1924); and William D. Cox, president of the Philadelphia Phillies, for betting on ball games (1943).

Landis also barred Babe Ruth and Bob Meusel of the New York Yankees from the first 40 games of the 1922 season for barnstorming without permission following the 1921 World Series.

He was in poor health for much of his final nine years as Commissioner and on November 25, 1944, eight days after being elected to a new seven-year term, he died at St. Luke's Hospital in Chicago at the age of 78. The following month he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

That is Masanori Murakami, the first ever Japanese ballplayer to play in the major leagues in 1964-65. He was the center in a great controversy. He came to the U.S. as a baseball "exchange student" with the Giants in 1964. He was only supposed to stay a short time but he pitched so well he reached the majors at age 20 in September 1964. His Japanese teams obviously wanted him back and a battle ensued. Commissioner Ford Frick and the Japanese baseball commissioner got into it big time. Eventually an agreement was reached. Murakami would pitch for the Giants in '65 and return to Japan in 1966.

They are all too small, I'd play this game if I didn't always need a magnifying glass, and I can't be bothered looking for one.

#30 is Catherine Elizabeth "Kate" Middleton, the main squeeze of Prince William of Wales. She will be the Queen of England one day.:jester::^^

Looks like Duane Kuiper... but the image is so small I can "bear"-ly tell, Bear.

Dude, you've gotta' find bigger images if we want to play this game. Some of your images are frickin' smaller than the thumbnails. Sheesh.

P.S. Just discovered this thread, looks like fun! Keep 'em coming Bear (as long as you find bigger pictures, that is!).

You are correct it is Kuiper. As far as size of photo's go that is a good size image. You might need to get your eyes checked if that is to small for you.

Dude, the picture of Kuiper isn't even a link. Nothing happens when I click on it. And the vast majority of pictures on this thread are like half an inch high on my monitor... which is about a 19" widescreen monitor, by the way. :)

He didn't do too well. He entered the game in relief. He pitched one inning gave up a hit ,a walk and two earned runs. He has a 7.04 ERA currently.

That's extremely unlikely, Bear. This season he pitched in low-A ball, the Sally League, and was injured half the season and pitched just ok when he was healthy. He had a lot of strikeouts but he walked a lot of hitters. I know some compare him to Bumgarner but that is a ridiculous comparison. Zach Wheeler is already 20 years old and still only in low-A ball. Bumgarner was already in the majors at age 20. Wheeler is just nine months younger than Bumgarner. I do like Wheeler but he is very raw is a long ways from the majors. Best case I say 2013-14 to reach the majors.

Well then I hope and I wrong. If Wheeler reaches the majors by 2012 that would mean he probably had a incredible 2011 season by probably jumping several minor league levels and is major league ready by 2012. The Giants can always use more young pitchers. Wheeler could be the perfect replacement for Zito once Zito's contract expires.

Zack is 20, but was 19 when he graduated H.S... it was his rookie year, he bypassed rookie ball and short-season if I'm not mistaken? The second half after making his appearance in the futures game, he was 2-0 with a 3.99 era and averaging 96mph (which from what i understand is up 2 to 4mph from draft date). Wheeler healthy would have ended the season in San Jose. Look for him to end in AA next year and maybe even an invite to Big League camp this spring. He has things to work on (such as location as you mentioned), but after watching him this year, it seems more of him just not having confidence in his own stuff more than it was him not having the ability to locate. His balls were always around the zone. But hey... just my opinion. I was lucky enough to be close enough to see the home games this year in Ga. Cool experience.
2013 seems realistic, but hey... im all for it being 2012 if he's ready!
