Some of you may not know but George Foster came up a Giant. He debuted with the Giants in 1969 as a 20-year old. He played nine games in 1969 and nine games in 1970. He played in 36 games for the Giants in 1971 then was traded to the Cincinnati Reds for Frank Duffy and Vern Geishert. These two players were not established major leaguers. Does anyone remember the details of this trade?

Duffy was the key for the Giants. Duffy had a minor league label as a can't miss shortstop and the Giants needed one. Well as you know he was a flop and missed by a mile. Foster was considered to be a good hitter but only a fair outfielder and in those days the Giants had tons of outfielders.:buttkick:

That's interesting, Bear, because the Giants had shortstop Chris Spier coming up as well at this time. Spier debuted in 1971. Spier was a three-time All-Star from 1972-74. What did you think of Spier when he first came up?

I always liked Spier, but the Giants must have had some questions as to if he could handle the position. This is back in the day where our current GM would have been thought a genius.

Here's a recent George Foster photo from a few weeks ago. He's 61 years old today. :)

I'm sure he's mellowed over the years. According to his wiki page he's a born-again Christian now. Man, I wish the Giants had a hitter like Foster today. :(
