As many of you people know the Bear is a horse racing nut. Saturday was the Breeders cup and if you missed it here is the race of the decade. Sit back and hold on. This is what horse racing is all about.

I heard bout it on Jim Rome's show this morning. Wow...A filly beating the boys in a huge race.

Nothing was more spectacular and jaw dropping than Secretariat at the 1973 Belmont. ;)

Damn near!:eek::bugeye:Not close.
Secretariat's run in the Belmont was just sick. He won by what 31 lengths?
This run was incredible too but not close to what Secretariat did IMO. Secretariat was the ultimate super horse. Maybe this filly will prove to be a super horse as well. She's on her way that's for sure. Hopefully they don't ruin her.

This could have been her last race. She is a perfect 14-0 and will go down as one of if not the best Filly of all time. :jester:

I don't understand horse racing. How come only three year olds can run the Triple Crown races?

It's just a way to make all things equal when a horse starts out. Older horses tend to be stronger but a really good two year old rarely runs past two. It's off to the breeding sheds and a life of pure sex.:pound:

So it sounds like owners make more money from stud fees than racing a top horse? I never understand why not have older horses run the Triple Crown races? Can you imagine a Kentucky Derby with 2-3 former Kentucky Derby winners in the field?

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. — Zenyatta bowed twice — deep, head-bobbing, theatrical flourishes that telegraphed to an adoring audience that it was about to see something special. Her groom, Mario Espinoza, smiled as the more than 44,973 fans crammed into Oaklawn Park, a cozy racetrack beneath the Ouachita Mountains, roared in delight Friday night.
Jockey Mike Smith looked up with a twinkle in his eye. He was not even on her back yet for the $500,000 Apple Blossom Invitational Handicap, but he knew a historic performance was only minutes away. Everyone knew Zenyatta, a massive mare with personality to burn, was going to tie the record of the great Cigar and the 1948 Triple Crown champion Citation of 16 straight victories against top-level competition.
Was it easy? How about a four-and-a-quarter-length victory for the mile-and-an-eighth race — if you can call it that — in which she spotted her four rivals double-digit lengths and then inhaled them around the far turn without Smith even having to move his hands or adjust his rump.
In fact, Smith was not even paying attention as he galloped her home.
“I was looking at the big screen in the stretch, to be honest,” said Smith, who was peering into the infield. “At that point, we’d already hit the front really easy, and I just moved a little to keep her focused.”
Smith and Zenyatta cruised home in 1 minute 50.71 seconds to reward the undefeated mare’s multitude of believers a paltry $2.10 for a $2 bet to win. She was followed home by Taptam and Be Fair.
Zenyatta’s trainer, John Shirreffs, beamed and offered a concise analysis of the stretch run.
“Mike started to move her outside,” he said. “Her ears went forward, head went down, she lengthened her stride, and it was over.”
You remember Rachel Alexandra, last year’s Horse of the Year? She was supposed to be here: the owner of Oaklawn, Charles Cella, had promised a pot of $5 million if the two stars tangled here.
But after Rachel Alexandra lost in New Orleans last month to Zenyatta’s stablemate Zardana, her owner, Jess Jackson, and her trainer, Steve Asmussen, thought better of sending her here.
Now, it is doubtful any amount of money will lure Rachel Alexandra onto the same racetrack as Zenyatta. She is great, an opinion brought even into sharper perspective this week after the news that the mare Personal Ensign, who retired undefeated after 13 races in 1988, died Thursday.
Even Asmussen, who saddled the fifth-place finisher War Echo, seemed awestruck by his close-up view of Zenyatta.
“That was incredible,” he said. “We were no match.”
Neither Jackson nor Asmussen has announced Rachel Alexandra’s next race. Zenyatta, who delighted the crowd with her signature high-step dancing, may next stop in New York. Her trainer, John Shirreffs, has not picked a race for her yet, but as the T-shirts that the Zenyatta camp is selling for charity trumpet: Zenyatta is dancing again in 2010.
D. Wayne Lukas, the Hall of Fame trainer of the third-place finisher, Be Fair, flashed a broad smile, grateful that he was a witness to racing history.
“The winner ran like who we thought she is,” he said. “This was great for racing. The good guys won.”
Zenyatta’s owner, Jerry Moss, feels the responsibility of managing a great horse.
“She was taking bows,” he said of her prerace antics. “I don’t know what else we could do but sit back and enjoy it. It’s a great feeling, and she’s a great gift.”
Ultimately, the goal is the Breeders’ Cup, which will be run in the fall at Churchill Downs. Moss made it clear that whether Rachel Alexandra shows up there or anywhere in between was not his problem.
“We’re going to plot our schedule,” he said. “If Rachel Alexandra wants to join us, she’s more than welcome.”
She may be the best horse running today!:)
