Rafael Rodriguez, the Dominican outfielder signed last July by San Francisco for a franchise-record $2.55 million, played in his first Arizona League game on Sunday.

Rodriguez recorded only one hit in six plate appearances, an RBI single in his first at-bat, but showed his skill in other areas.

In the bottom of the first inning, he prevented a one-out, runner-at-third situation for his pitcher by recording an outfield assist. Then, after reaching on a fielder's choice in the 10th, Rodriguez recorded his first career stolen base.

The 6'5" prospect, who will turn seventeen in July and is the youngest player on the AZL Giants' roster, also made some mistakes. He was caught stealing after his only hit, and was thrown out at home trying to score the go-ahead run from second on a single in the 10th inning.

But after all, it was only a rookie league game.

Second-baseman Julio Izturis, a 2006 signee from Venezuela, also made his U.S. debut for the Giants, collecting four hits (including a double) and a run in seven at-bats in the lead-off slot. He also stole two bases.

Izturis is a full brother of Major Leaguers Maicer Izturis (Angels) and half-brother Cesar Izturis (Orioles), both of whom play the infield.

The starting pitcher for the AZL Giants was a name familiar to fans of San Francisco's big league club. Joe Martinez, who was lucky to escape serious injury when he was struck in the head with a line drive in April, started the game in a rehab assignment.

Martinez allowed three earned runs in 2 2/3 innings of work.

Lets hope this kid Rafael Rodriguez works out.

Also it is great to see Joe Martinez throwing again.

Rafael Rodriguez was compared to a young Dave Winfield by Baseball America. He's only 16 so we won't be seeing him in San Francisco for at least 4-5 years.

I got to give Sabean and the Giants organization their due credit. Look at all these great prospects the Giants have at the moment.

Buster Posey, C
Angel Villalona, 1B
Madison Bumgarner, LHP
Tim Alderson, RHP
Thomas Neal, LF
Brandon Crawford, SS
Roger Kieschnick, RF
Rafael Rodriguez, LF
Nick Noonan, 2B
Coner Gillaspie, 3B

That's quite a bit of young talent that has been drafted or signed as a FA in just the past 2-3 years.

Rafael Rodriguez continues to play well in his first professional season, .294/.400/.324 in nine games. What I find most amazing is that he has six walks and five strikeouts. These young Dominican 16 year old prospects almost always have horrible horrible walk rates. It looks like Rodriguez will probably go to low-A ball next year, to Augusta.

This Kid could be a real find. It would be great to see this Kid ready in say two to three years.;)

I agree, Bear. I just assumed Rodriguez's first professional season would be more about him struggling and gettting used to be on his own in a foreign country. He actually turns 17 tomorrow. But so far so good.

Rodriguez had a three hit game. He's now hitting .326/.442/.419 with more walks than strikeouts. :awesomework.gif

If he keeps this up he will be up here in no time at all. These numbers look great. :beerbang:
