SAN FRANCISCO, CA-Dusty Rhodes, a seven-year Major League veteran, who helped the Giants win their last World Series title in 1954, passed away yesterday of cardiopulmonary arrest at Valley Hospital Medical Center in Las Vegas. He was 82 years old.

"The San Francisco Giants were deeply saddened by the passing of Rhodes, who was one of the all-time great New York Giants. Our condolences go out to the Rhodes family for their tremendous loss and we extend our thoughts to Dusty's teammates, his friends, and to all those touched by his passing."

Obtained by the New York Giants from Nashville as part of a minor league working agreement in 1952, the left-handed hitting outfielder played with the New York Giants from 1952-57, and then appeared in 54 games for the San Francisco Giants in 1959. Over 576 career games, the outfielder hit .253 with 54 home runs and 207 RBI.

Rhodes was well-known for his play in the '54 World Series when he went 4-for-6 with two home runs and seven RBI in the Giants' four-game sweep of the heavily favored, 111-win Cleveland Indians. During the Series, Rhodes hit a pinch-hit, walk-off three-run homer at the Polo Grounds in the 10th inning of Game 1 off future Hall of Famer Bob Lemon, giving the Giants a 5-2 win. In Game 2, he had a pinch single and then homered in the 7th inning against another future Hall of Famer, Early Wynn to highlight a 3-1 victory. Finally, in Game 3, he delivered a two-run pinch single to spark a 6-2 New York win.

Born in Matthews, Alabama in 1927, Rhodes will be buried Saturday in Las Vegas.
