SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants announced on Monday that shortstop Omar Vizquel, who's creeping closer to returning from left knee surgery, will continue his Minor League injury rehabilitation assignment on Tuesday with the organization's Class A San Jose affiliate.
The move was purely logistical, since Triple-A Fresno, whom Vizquel played with on Sunday and Monday, has departed for a trip to New Orleans. Should Vizquel be ready to rejoin the Giants by the end of the week, as has been speculated, he'd already be in the Bay Area. The Giants open their next homestand on Friday against the Phillies.
On Monday, Vizquel singled up the middle in the first inning, and he went 1-for-3 while playing five innings in Fresno's 2-0 victory over Triple-A Omaha. He played four innings on Sunday, went 0-for-2 and received no fielding chances other than a popup.
Vizquel underwent surgery on Feb. 27 to remove a torn meniscus in his knee and missed the rest of Spring Training. He sustained a bone bruise in early April that further delayed his progress.
Vizquel, 41, needs to play 14 games at shortstop to become the all-time leader in that category at that position. He'd pass fellow Venezuelan Luis Aparicio, who played shortstop in 2,583 games.
San Jose's game on Tuesday against Lake Elsinore begins at 7 p.m. PT, with gates opening at 5:30 p.m.
As you guys know Vizquel is a favorite of mine. That being said I would have him share time with one of the Kids for the rest of the season, so that he does not re injure himself, and to help give a prospect a chance to develop.
