I'd go to the ball game and there was a guy that sat behind home plate who for some reason was not a Willie Mays fan. Every time Willie came the the plate this guy would yell out "hey it's popup Mays"...

One day the guy was particularity loud. Willie hit the ball over the center field fence on the first pitch. :D

I could tell you about the time Willie, and I had dinner, but I don't tell stories very well, and what we talked about was for the book.

I saw Mays play at Shea Stadium one glorious night. Yes, he hit one out. I was with my father. A great night.

I have always said that Mays was the best all around player (hit for avg, hit for power, run, catch, throw) I ever saw. BTW, Ted Williams said the same thing.

My father, whose knowledge of baseball rivals my own (he played in the Brooklyn Dodger organization at one time) reminds me that I never saw DiMaggio. I respect his opinion, but I still say Mays was the best I ever saw (Barry Bonds was #2, BTW.)

Ironically, Mays himself has often said that growing up, his idol was Joe DiMaggio. And Mays and my father were born in the same year.

Mays was also the classiest guy I ever saw. He never had a hard word for anyone - rival or teammate. He came from that time when guys played hard, but kept no hard feelings before or after the game (my Dad is like that, too).

Happy Birthday Willie. And thanks for taking me to the game, Dad.

Gotta love players like Mays!! Players like Mays(are there others)? There are very few players like Mays in baseball history, five tool guys. A few guys would be in no particular order:

Honus Wagner
Ty Cobb
Tris Speaker
Mickey Mantle
Hank Aaron
Oscar Charleston
Frank Robinson

One ballpayer was was simply magnificent across the board, but had constant injuries, was Eric Davis.

How many were you able to watch in person?

SF Kid
01-19-2009, 05:02 PM
Mantle (once)

Aaron all the time

Frank Robinson all the time when he played for Cincy

Add Musial & Clemente. Saw them many times in San Francisco.

The rest are too old.

To leave Barry Bonds off in his prime is unbelievable. I know you are a Barry hater but even you should know better than this. Also I am no Rickey Henderson fan but he belongs in this group also. I just can't believe you and this list.:nono:

I agree with you about Musial & Clemente. They were great players. Also Ted Williams & Yaz were no bad also.

Players I have seen in person would be Mantle, Aaron, Robinson, Musial, Clemente, Yaz, Williams & Davis. Add Bonds and Henderson to that list also.
All great players but there are others also.;)

I'm not a Barry hater. I defended him for years. My list wasn't meant to be exhaustive, just a few names that came to the top of my head. My only two issues with Bonds:

1) His PED use clouds the degree of his dominance. However, he was dominant in the 1990s

2) The Kid will beat the crap out of me comparing Barry to the Say Hey Kid!

Also my list was very specific, it was referring to "5-Tool" guys. I love Rickey but he was never really an elite power hitter year in and year out. Rick was more of a "4.5-Tool" guy. :D

Isn't that like asking who is the fastest catcher in history? :) Besides I thought that Bobby Bonds was the greatest power hitting leadoff hitter.

LoL! In the new Willie Mays book, page 339, the author actually mentions the "pop-up Mays" heckler. Mays used to have dreams about him according to the author. :o

Maybe nobody on this board mentioned it, but the Giants had a hell of a celebration. I've read many articles online about Mays and his legacy. Quite a guy. :)

By the way, I bought one of those Willie Mays statue replicas they gave away at the game from a guy on eBay. It's on its way to me right now. Can't wait to see it.

How big is it? I don't even know how tall the replica is?

Here are a couple of pictures that the guy on eBay put up of it. I don't have it in hand yet, but I have a tracking number and it'll be here in a day or two. :)

Those are some nice pics, Kid. Thanks! :beerbang:

And since you mentioned "Worth The Wait"... let me recommend Andrew Baggarly's "Band of Misfits". It is absolutely incredible, a great, great read.

More than just about the Giants' championship season -- which is of course the focus of the book -- it also goes into the recent history of the Giants and how they've changed since the Bonds "era". It has sections on Buster Posey, Timmy, Huff, Burrell, Ross, Wilson, etc., etc., etc.

It starts with an emotional chapter on Bengie Molina's life, career and how he found out that he'd been traded to the Rangers. Then the book kicks into high gear with the second half of the seaon, with sections on all the Giants' acquisitions, the ups and downs, the post season.

I thought I knew "everything" about last season, but there's a lot of great stuff in the book. I couldn't put it down!
