What's the big deal about Dallas McPherson? First of all a ballplayer named "Dallas"? That's just wrong. :p But seriously, though, McPherson is 29 years old and has failed in this three shots in the majors. Yes, he did lead the minors in HR's in '08 but he struck out 168 times in 123 games. That's awful. He'll strike out even more in the majors. And he hit just .275 in the PCL. A .275 BA in the PCL is like a .235-.240 BA in the majors. He's basically a poor man's Adam Dunn without the walks.

I see him as this years Hamilton, the change of scenery will suit him nicely. They need power.

This year's Hamilton? McPherson doesn't have Hamilton type baseball talent.

I see, well, I meant a sleeper who could have a big year. Less talent maybe but able to be a good big league power hitter on a PATHETIC Giants squad, id give it a shot.

The Giantd have other better option I would think. I just don't hitters that all they do is hit HRs and nothing else. Those guy are useless IMO. Besides where would McPherson play? Sandoval is playing third base right now.

Yea well, Sando and Ishi are struggling right now, why not give this guy a shot? I dont care where he plays, just wanna see what he is capable of.

Well, it's only a week into the season. It's not time to start making major moves yet.

Its not really a major move, there is two unnecessary vets on the team that this guy can replace. Not even a starter, bring him off the bench.

Free agent third baseman Dallas McPherson (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5996) has agreed to terms with the Oakland A's (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=oak) on a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training camp, his agent said.

McPherson is expected to compete for a starting job with the A's, who used Adam Kennedy (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4157), Bobby Crosby (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5770) and Jack Hannahan (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=28468) as their principal third basemen in 2009. Oakland's third base contingent hit a combined 10 home runs and ranked 25th in the majors with a .672 OPS.

The A's traded Hannahan to Seattle in July, and Kennedy and Crosby are free agents this winter.

McPherson, 29, once ranked among the game's elite prospects. In 2005, Baseball America rated him No. 2 on the Angels' prospect list behind first baseman Casey Kotchman (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5918).

But McPherson has since missed the entire 2007 and 2009 seasons with back problems.

McPherson has 150 home runs and a .586 career slugging percentage in 608 minor league games. He has 18 homers in 371 major league at-bats with the Angels and Florida Marlins (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=fla), but he's struck out 126 times and had trouble staying on the field in recent years.

After signing a minor league deal with San Francisco last spring, McPherson underwent back surgery in July. But agent Matt Sosnick said he's ready to compete for a job in spring training.

"He's already working out and taking batting practice,'' Sosnick said. "He's 100 percent.''

McPherson, a former Scott Boras client, recently hired Paul Cobbe and Sosnick as his representatives.

The A's have a history of success in resurrecting strikeout-prone, power-hitting former prospects.

Jack Cust (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4609), who bounced around for several years with the Arizona, Baltimore, Colorado, Oakland and San Diego organizations, has averaged 28 homers and 76 RBIs since 2007 in his second stint with the A's.
