Giants Sign Juan Uribe
By Tim Dierkes [January 29, 2009 at 10:47pm CST]
10:47pm: Ken Rosenthal's source says the Giants' Uribe signing will not affect their pursuit of Crede.

2:58pm: According to SI.com's Jon Heyman, the Giants signed infielder Juan Uribe to a minor league deal potentially worth about $1MM. Not sure if this affects the team's interest in Joe Crede.

Uribe, 30 in March, hit .247/.296/.386 for the White Sox in 353 plate appearances last year while playing second base, third base, and a little bit of shortstop. Based on the plus/minus system, his defense has been below-average in recent years.

I do not understand what the Giants have tried to do this offseason, and this further perplexes me. How many garbage players do they need?

Sandoval hit .237 against lefties last year. Is that a concern? Uribe hit a little over .250, is that better from a guy who has been in the league so much longer? No, imo.

Ishi went a whole 0-2 with a bb and k, so he hasnt much of a chance to show what he can do either.

My take...

I too, am not sure what this means. Baggarly says the Giants have been looking at JU since last summer. Perhaps they are not sold on Aurilia coming back. Perhaps they want to hedge their bets at 3B (if Sandoval struggles), SS (Renteria needs a day off) and 2B (neither Frandsen or Velez do well). Uribe can play all 3 positions. Also, if 1B is a problem, and Sandoval is moved there, JU can fill in at 3B.

Two more thoughts - 1) they signed JU to a minor league contract, so the Giants risk is limited. And 2) the Giants may have decided it is better in the long term for Manny Burris to have steady at bats in AAA than it would be for him to have sporadic at bats with the big club.

These two thoughts are what make sense to me. Little cost and a chance to play Burris daily in fresno.

So that means they feel Manny B may struggle in ST and doesnt make the club full time?

I think Burris is on his way to Fresno for the full year unless there is a injury.:(

So, if that happens, is Velez on the team? In your opinion/s?
