SANTO DOMINGO, Domican Republic -- Pedro Martinez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=2717) and the Florida Marlins (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=fla) are believed to be in the beginning stages of negotiating a contract and could meet next week, a source told ESPNdeportes.com Saturday night.

The Marlins have spoken with Martinez's agent, the source said.
The Marlins would not confirm any interest, and MLB.com, the Miami Herald and South Florida Sun-Sentinel all cited sources as saying that the team is not interested in the 37-year-old.

Martinez has won three Cy Young awards and has a career record of 214-99, with a 2.91 ERA and 3,117 strikeouts in 17 seasons with Los Angeles, Montreal, Boston and the New York Mets (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/clubhouse?team=nym).

Martinez struggled last season and finished with a 5-6 record with a 5.61 ERA with the Mets, after battling injuries and dealing with the death of his father. In his first year with the Mets, Martinez won 15 games and struck out 208 batters in 217 innings. But he has gone 17-15 in the last three seasons.

Martinez owns a house in Miami.

Maybe he can be a #5 but it is sad to see such a GREAT all-time pitcher go this far past his prime.

It's time for Pedro Martinez to retire. These players think they can play forever and they just shoot themselves in the foot.

It's the same with most pro athletes. They just can't hang 'em up.

I always look back to the Willie Mays debacle. His last year with the Mets was just flat out embarrassing. Why do they insist on tarnishing their legacy?

Great pitcher, Hall of Famer for sure. He had one of the great peaks ever. His 1999-2000 seasons were simply mind-boggling. Not the most durable pitcher.

Like Mc. Hall of Fame player, who broke down too many times, and stayed past the time he should have retired.
