I know we are all excited about seeing Posey, Bumgarner and Alderson join Sandoval in the bigs for years to come!!:beerbang: How do you all feel about Gillaspie? Is he in this group?

Yes, but not quit as much. If Sandoval plays third base and Burrissplays second he will be blocked. At this point to use Sebean's term he is in a fall back position.;)

Geez that sucks for this young guy, he was the first 08 draftee to get to the bigs and that may be done for quite some time!!

However if he comes along as they hope he is another guy they can use in a trade.:)

I am not high on Gillaspe. He has no power. And the scouts say he profiles out to be similar to Bill Mueller. Bill Mueller? :o

Hey Mueller was a great Giant and was a pivotal role player in the Bosox first run to the title!! Bosox, Doh :banghead:

Man do we see this guy with different eyes. I was a big Bill M. fan and thought he was second only to Matt Williams in SF Giant History at third base. Power is not everything! ;)

In the Giants park, who is a power hitter? They need guys who can find the gap and scoot! They do need that power hitter but everyone seems to think power fizzles out in San Fran. They need a Dunn type power hitter, he could hit the glove oppo field style!! Maybe not but someone with his power would be sweet!

I liked Bill Mueller. He was a solid player with the Giants but he wasn't a star by any means. I wasn't knocking Mueller, though. I was just commenting that Gillaspsie is not really a great prospect in terms of star potential. For me to be excited about Gillaspie shouldn't he be compared to Scott Rolen? David Wright? Power is not everything but haven't we been discussing the Giants complete lack of power for the past week or so?
Bill Mueller the #2 Giants third baseman all-time? Jimmy Ray Hart and Darrell Evans say :wavey:.

Are we looking for a 27 homer guy? That is where Rowand was before he joined the Giants. He had 13 last year. I dont care how much a guy strikes out, the Giants if they are gonna get a power hitter, it needs to be 100% raw power!!

Rowand went from the easiest ball park to homer to one of the toughest. His decrease in HR was expected. I do care how much a player strikes out. And, no, I do not want Adam Dunn on the Giants.

Hart was good but stupid. This at times got in his way.:pound:
Evans mostly player First base and he was not a great player and I would rather have Mueller.;)

At the right price and if he played only first base I would take Dunn.

I believe I said Adam Dunn type power. NO? So, should we find a way to get rid of Lewis? He struck out 124 times in 468 at bats. Also a no, low average, obp and strikes out a lot is a guy I do not want but if he has a good average or is consistantly on base I will take him. 40 and 100 last year with an obp of .373, That is pretty good.

No true. Here are Evens defensive breakdown as a Giant.
1976
1B-83 games
3B-5
1977
LF-81
1B-41
3B-35
1978
3B-155
1979
3B-159
1980
3B-140
1B-14
SS-9
1981
3B-87
1B-12
1982
3B-84
1B-49
SS-13
1983
1B-113
3B-32
SS-9
So we get:
3B-697
1B-312
LF-81
SS-22
Looks like Evens was the Giants regular third baseman for five seasons plus he played third base more than twice as many games as first base.
Well than Evans must have been the pits if he played that much there and the memory fades that much. He was a guy with warning track power who still tried to hit it out every time even if a single or walk would do. It was all about Evans. :nono:

I remember Bill Mueller. He had a great swing. And he was a very good defender at 3B. His problem was injuries. He kept getting hurt. Sometimes to the bizzare - he once broke his kneecap. The Giants had to make a roster decision with him, and they decided to let him go. He went to Dusty Baker's Cubs, where... he got hurt. The Cubs eventually let him go, and he drifted to Boston... where he a) finally got healthy, b) won the batting title and c) won a WS ring. Then he got hurt again. He is now out of baseball (he finished up with LAD in 06).
Gillaspie was up for a sip of coffee in '08. I liked what I saw. He has a swing that reminds me of Meuller - short, quick, informed (he is very good at going the other way). I was also struck by the confidence with which he plays - he did not hit 11 82 .419 as a junior (his last year) at perennial power house Wichita State by accident.
He is also a talented defender. I could see him playing 3B for the Giants some day. I could also see him hitting .300. I know he does not project for power, but when was the last time the Giants had a good fielding .300 hitter at 3B?
I know that he seems blocked right now, but things can change. Promising players don't pan out (Todd Linden, Dan Ortmeier, Jason Ellison). Others get hurt - Marcus Sanders, Merkin Valdez (it was just announced that he is going under the knife - elbow - again).

There is talk of moving Gillaspie to second base. That would be a smart move IMO. His lack of power wouldn't be an issue as a second baseman.

Matty was just cool. I remember when debuted with the Giants he was already bald! :pound: Matty was actually on the 1987 Giants postseason roster but he didn't see any action.

So back to Conor Gillaspie. He was the first player from the '08 draft to reach he majors. I found that odd because he really didn't do anything special in his very short time in the minors yo warrant a call up. Yet, the Giants brought him up to the majors and he go into 8 games and had seven plate appearances. Had one hit and two walks.
Here are his minor league stats for '08.
http://minors.baseball-reference.com/players.cgi?pid=37347
I'd like to see what he can do over a full season and if the Giants will indeed move him to second base.

Dear SF Kid: If you are going to bestow an ethnic slur on the Italian people (even if you are one of them), the least you could do is spell it correctly - the word is guinea (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Transwiki:Guinea_(ethnic_slur))
