Interesting story. Seems Furcal wants 4/$48m. A's had 4/$35-$40m in mind. Furcal said no.

This makes the Giants deal for Edgar Renteria look better to me. First, Rafeal "I-had-back-surgery-last-season" Furcal wants 2 more years and some $30m more than Edgar "I-was-out-of-shape-last-season" Renteria accepted from the Giants.

Now it looks like Furcal may be looking at a return to the Dodgers. He finished up a 3/$39m contract with them this year.

Perhaps some people in the A's front office have been looking at some of our thoughts regarding the risks of signing Furcal (my posts among them).

I will post more of my thoughts on this, if I see there is interest from the readers of this thread.

The full story is here (http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081206&content_id=3704404&vkey=hotstove2008&fext=.jsp).

It is not the 12Mil per year that turns me off it is the 4 years. If healthy he is a great player but that is a BIG if. If he wants 12 Mil than 2 years is a long contract. If he wants 8.5 to 9 Mil than I could see 3 to 4 years. For me its either or. Short on years more money. Less money more years.

I think we might have dodged a bullet by NOT signing this guy.

Four years at 48 Mil? No way!
Four years at 38 Mil? Maybe.

Can't even be sure he'll come back strong. Glad we passed.

What I find interesting is the fact that this rejection was leaked to the press. When was the last time such a refusal of an offer by a player was announced publicly, in such a fashion?

At this point, we must assume that either the A's did it, or Furcal's camp did it.

If the A's did it, they are trying to bring some sense of reality to Furcal, and to other FA.

If Furcal's camp did it, they are trying pressure the A's and other potential suitors to set the market for his services higher.

I don't know how this will turn out, but there are two things I know for sure, 1) there are concerns about Furcal on the part of the A's, and possibly others (as have been discussed on this board by me and many of my friends here, and 2) I am glad my preference for Renteria over Furcal was one with which the Giants agreed.
