Susan Slusser, Chronicle Staff Report

The A's are working to complete a trade with the Rockies that would bring Matt Holliday to Oakland in exchange for reliever Huston Street, starter Greg Smith and outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, major-league sources said Monday.

Smith confirmed Monday that he is flying to Denver for a physical in the next day or two.

"I don't know how official everything is," Smith said. "All I know is I've been called, and I'm flying to Denver probably tomorrow."

He emphasized he does not know any details about other players who might be involved in a deal.

Holliday, a 28-year-old outfielder hit .321 last season, with 25 home runs. He's a career .319 hitter.

Holliday has just one year left on his contract, for $13.5 million. A source said extending Holliday's contract is not part of the deal. Holliday's agent is Scott Boras, who is well-known for driving hard bargains.

Street, 25, has been an A's closer for four seasons, posting save totals of, in chronological order, 23, 37, 16 and, in 2008, 18. He was affected by injuries the past two seasons and was replaced by Brad Ziegler as the closer for the final months of last season, when Street's last save was July 27.

Gonzalez, 22, came into the 2008 season as the A's most touted prospect. He played 85 games for Oakland, hitting .242 with 22 doubles and four home runs. His on-base percentage was .273.

Smith, 24, was 7-16 as a rookie starter in 2008, with a 4.16 ERA.

Chronicle staff writer John Shea contributed to this report.

It seems to me that the Giants could match a deal like this for Holliday.:(

The Rockies must be on drugs. They gave up their best player for an injured closer who lost his job, a prospect that hit .241 with a .273 OBP, and a rookie pitcher that was 7-16? Am I missing something?

Yes to all your points, but don't you think the Giants could have given them a better deal? I guess the Rockies did not want to trade him within their own division.:shakehead:

Bingo! The Giants could have given them Jonathan Sanchez at least. But this deal makes no sense to me. Holliday is a FA after the '09 season and unless the A's are wiling to pay huge money, Holliday is gone after next season.

The A's will be moving into their New Stadium so maybe they will start to pay their players.;)

Is that Fremont Stadium deal a "done" deal? I thought it was more pie-in-the-sky dreaming than reality right now.

You know you maybe right. I don't keep up on the A's as much as I use to.:nono:

The link below has many updates on the new A's stadium. Apparently they are in the environmental impact study stage and a full project description will be released to the public next month. This stadium project seems really hush-hush to me. :wtf:

You're welcome. :nono: The new A's Stadium looks pretty sweet. But only 32,000 seats? That sounds like too few seats. Of course that means the A's can charge us up the wazzu for tickets.
