The A's are working to complete a trade with the Rockies that would bring Matt Holliday to Oakland in exchange for reliever Huston Street, starter Greg Smith and outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, major-league sources said Monday.
Smith confirmed Monday that he is flying to Denver for a physical in the next day or two.
"I don't know how official everything is," Smith said. "All I know is I've been called, and I'm flying to Denver probably tomorrow."
He emphasized he does not know any details about other players who might be involved in a deal.
Holliday, a 28-year-old outfielder hit .321 last season, with 25 home runs. He's a career .319 hitter.
Holliday has just one year left on his contract, for $13.5 million. A source said extending Holliday's contract is not part of the deal. Holliday's agent is Scott Boras, who is well-known for driving hard bargains.
Street, 25, has been an A's closer for four seasons, posting save totals of, in chronological order, 23, 37, 16 and, in 2008, 18. He was affected by injuries the past two seasons and was replaced by Brad Ziegler as the closer for the final months of last season, when Street's last save was July 27.
Gonzalez, 22, came into the 2008 season as the A's most touted prospect. He played 85 games for Oakland, hitting .242 with 22 doubles and four home runs. His on-base percentage was .273.
Smith, 24, was 7-16 as a rookie starter in 2008, with a 4.16 ERA.

It seems to me that the Giants could match a deal like this for Holliday.:(
