Yes, teams continue to ask San Francisco Giants general manager Brian Sabean about Matt Cain. And Sabean continues to say he is untouchable.

"Yes. Clubs know that. That hasn't necessarily discouraged clubs from inquiring or making suggestions of offers. But we don't see anything out there that gives us a net gain by losing him,'' Sabean said.

Sabean is seeking offensive help in other ways, including free agency and trades for pitchers not named Cain, Tim Lincecum or Brian Wilson. His best remaining chips include Jonathan Sanchez and pitching prospects, though it wouldn't be easy parting with top prospects Madison Bumgarner, 19, or Tim Alderson, who turned 20 this week, both first-round picks from the 2007 draft.

If the focus is infielders, that would exclude Ramirez and fellow free-agent outfielders Adam Dunn and Pat Burrell, though the Giants remain in a don't-rule-out-anything mode — and Dunn could play first base.

Meantime, Rafael Furcal's camp indicated the Giants are interested in the shortstop as a leadoff hitter. If the Giants acquire a shortstop, Burriss would move to second. If they land a second baseman (such as Gold Glover Orlando Hudson, who hit third for Arizona before his wrist injury), Burriss would play short.

Don't rule out anything. Except for Tim Lincecum, I do not believe any player is off limits as far as a trade goes no matter what the Giants say.

Both with the glove and the bat. I think he would be perfect in the #1 spot in the batting order. This is just my thoughts.;)

I like him too, good glove, steals bases. I checked out Furcal's stats at AT&T Park. And it's not good. In 31 games (129 ABs) he's hit .248/.300/.295. Ouch!

With his talent I would be willing to take a chance on him. He is the kind of player who could be the leader for the infield some what like Omar.:beerbang:

I must dissent here...

Some observations about Rafeal Furcal...

1) He was very good with Atlanta, and in his first year with LA (three seasons ago). However, since then, he has not been healthy. And his problem - back trouble, requiring surgery - is one of the two worst problems a baseball player can have (injury to your hand(s) is the other). Giant fans may remember another infielder whose promising career was derailed by a back injury that changed him forever - Edgardo Alfonzo.

2) He plays a very demanding position in the field (SS) for someone coming off of back surgery.

3) He plays a very demanding position in the lineup (Lead off) for someone coming off of back surgery.

4) While not old, Furcal is no youngster - 31 years old. With his back injury, there is a chance that his best years may be behind him (again, Giants Fans, look at Edgardo Alfonzo).

5) His game - speed, steals, and defense - requires he be healthy. You can work with someone like Benji Molina if he gets hurt. With Furcal, if he is hurt, he will need to sit.

Just my opinion, with all respect...

Your case is well presented, and I would take notice of these points before I sign Furcal but if he passed a medical exam I still would need to look at this deal. You could be right and he might be done already. Thats what medical exams are for.
