Minor League Coaching Changes Afoot:
Decker in line for promotion from San Jose

Andrew Baggerly has prvided some interesting news...

My take...
Seems that Steve Decker is being promoted from managing San Jose (A) to managing Connecticut (AA). San Jose had a very good 2008 - they made the Cal League playoffs. That team had Tim Alderson, Clay Tanner, Kevin Pucetas, and at the end, Buster Posey. All of these names could easily be chosen to begin the 2009 season in Connecticut (as could a fast tracker like Madison Bumgarner, and possibly Nick Noonan) so I do not see this as a coincidence. As for Posey, Decker is a former MLB catcher, so I think this move has been well thought out.

All in all, 2 things are indicated here:
1) Quite a bit of the Giants talent seems to be rising to (AA)
2) The Giants may be grooming more than just players in Connecticut.

Also, Augusta (Low-A) manager Andy Skeels is being promoted to take Decker’s place in San Jose. We all know how sucessful Augusta was in 2008, so this comes as no surprise either.

As a CT resident, I think I may look into catching a few Defenders games in Norwich in 2009 (even though I am at the other end of the state). If I can, I will try to file a few scouting reports - if there is any interest.

Regards...

kar! You read my mind! I've been thinking about getting some folks here to do a little bit of scouting. I have a really good friend that lives in Portland. I'm trying to get him to join SFGF so he could scout the Salem-Kiezer Volcanoes of the Northwest League. Portland is only about 30 miles away. I live in San Jose so I can cover the San Jose Giants and perhaps take an occasional trip out to Fresno as well.

I wonder if Steve Decker is being groomed to take over the big club after Bochy leaves the Giants?

Does Decker have the smarts to manage a ML team? My memory of him as a catcher was he did not call a very good game. If my memory has not failed me than that does not say much for him as a possible manager. Maybe he is a late bloomer.:)

I have no idea. But he has been very successful as a minor league manager so far.
