Noah Lowry arrived in Arizona one day after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left elbow and has begun treatment in a bid to be 100 percent healthy by spring training, head trainer Dave Groeschner said.

Dr. Lewis Yocum, a noted orthopedist in Southern California, shaved a bone spur behind Lowry's left elbow that forced him to stop a monthslong rehabilitation from a separate surgery to relieve pressure on nerves in his forearm.

Groeschner is not allowed to discuss specifics of the latest surgery because Lowry has not signed a medical-privacy waiver, but a team spokesman who is not bound by the waiver said Yocum's exploratory investigation of Lowry's elbow during the arthroscopy found no further damage.

Lowry has not pitched in a major-league game since Aug. 29, 2007, when his season was cut short by forearm tingling that finally, in spring training, was diagnosed as exertional compartment syndrome. In March, Lowry underwent surgery to cut the fascia surrounding his forearm muscles to relieve pressure on the nerves. He had hoped to advance his long recovery by pitching in the Arizona Fall League and then the Mexican winter league, but his latest surgery will prevent him from throwing competitively until spring training.

Lowry in 2009 will enter the final year of a four-year, $9.25 million contract with a $6.25 million club option for 2010.

Pining for WBC: A rash of players have said they have no interest playing in the 2009 World Baseball Classic, including Tim Lincecum, but Randy Winn said he would love to return to the WBC. Winn was 3-for-11 for Team USA in the 2006 Classic as he shared center field with Vernon Wells and Johnny Damon. The United States will pick its team in January and start the '09 WBC in a pool with Canada, Venezuela and Italy, the games to be played in Toronto.

"I'd love to go," Winn said. "It was an unbelievable experience, an absolutely great experience. I don't know how to put in words what it means to play for your country. I didn't think I'd feel any different, but I did."

Winn had a down year for the Giants upon returning from the WBC, his average dropping to .262, but that had more to do with a lingering knee injury incurred in April with the Giants.

Nate Schierholtz, who donned the red, white and blue in the 2008 Summer Olympics, said he would play in the WBC "for sure" if asked.

"I think it would be cool," he said.

Briefly: First-round draft pick Buster Posey and outfielder Roger Kieschnick, the Giants' third pick in 2008, are playing for the Waikiki BeachBoys in the Hawaiian winter league and getting tutelage from batting coach Desi Wilson, a big, left-handed first baseman who had a cup of coffee with the Giants in 2006. Kieschnick is off to a good start (5-for-17 with a home run). Posey is 2-for-7. He also has five passed balls, including three in one game. ... The National League Cy Young will be awarded Nov. 11.

The Bear has little hope for a Lowry recovery. I think who plays in the 2009 World Baseball Classic will be interesting. Who is and what do we know about Roger Kiechnick? Just some of the Bears thoughts.

This was written on thecollegebaseballblog.com about Roger Kieschnick in April of 2008.

Roger Kieschnick 6′3, 215, RF
Kieschnick is a stud hitter with plus power who should be a first round pick in June. He is a true and legitimate power hitting prospect. He played for Team USA and even tied Pedro Alvarez for the team lead in HR’s. He is hitting .307 with 11 HR, 36 RBI, 10 Doubles, 21 K’s and 26 walks.

My additional info...
He was a College Junior in 2008, and despite early predictions of going in the first round in the 2008 draft, he went in the third (Buster Posey went in the first, Connor Gillaspie, in the second). The consensus was that Kieschnick had a very ordinary Junior year at Texas Tech, and slipped out of the top two rounds. However, he is generally agreed to be on the plus side with all 5 tools.

He is also playing in Hawaii, with Buster Posey, and his stats, as of Nov 4 (along with Posey) are...

Player POS G AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI TB BB SO SB CS OBP SLG AVG OPS E
Posey C 13 51 14 23 3 0 0 15 26 6 10 0 0 .517 .510 .451 1.026 1
Kieschnick OF 26 88 13 23 5 2 4 23 44 15 37 0 0 .368 .500 .261 .868 2
