Why is it called the foul pole if when a baseball hits it the ball is fair?

Why is it called the hit-and-run play if the base runner actually runs before the pitch? Shouldn't it be called the run-and-hit play?

The Chiefs got a good player in Glen Dorsey.
If he's right (health wise) he's a monster and will be a pain in the ass for my Raiders for 10 years.
I just returned from the DMV. What a joke. I had an appointment for 3:10pm. When I got there I had to stand in line and was seen at 3:34pm. At that point I was given a number and seen again at 3:54pm and was done at 3:56pm. When I arrived the line for those without appointments was next to the line I was in. A young Kid who looked the way the SF Kid looked 40 years ago on steroids with tats every where. Was gone by 3:30pm. So much for appointments at the DMV.:shakehead: :wtf1:

:( Sorry a typo on my part. I meant to say back hole. I fixed it now.
The Bear has been thinking how much better this board has been since the first of the year with the addition of new members "GiantsFan2010", "Craven", "thebayareabeast", "cvgiant", "Furlow", "swing 4 the cove" and especially new members "Sticksicle", "Jackie-Moon", "EIM86", and last, but not least my old friend "LTR". This place is a much better Giants board because of you, and I wanted you to know that the Bear is really grateful.
Man I must be growing soft in my old age!:pound:

What happened to the annual paw-smacks you used to give, Bear? :p
And I agree this season this board has shown great growth and the new members are great contributors. Keep up the good work, men. Perhaps one of these days we'll have our first female member. :)

Random thought of the day: When two planes come within a certain distance of each other but don't collide, they call it a "near miss". What???
As George Carlin once said, "When two planes almost collide, they call it a 'near miss'. It's a near hit!!!! A collision is a near miss. 'BOOOM'. Look, they nearly missed."

:pound:Why is it called the foul pole if when the baseball hits it, the ball is fair?Because it's baseball. Nobody has dumber rules except golf.

My wife has been humoring me and sometimes actually staying in the room with me while I've been watching the Giants' playoff games. So, naturally, she occasionally asks questions when she doesn't quite understand what's going on.
Just a few of the things that have her shaking her head:
* Foul tips/balls off the bat count as a strike if there's less than two strikes, but you can keep fouling them off forever after you have two strikes.
* The runners have to be touching the bag they're standing on when a fielder makes a catch, but other times are free to run whenever they want.
* Guys can try to steal bases while the fielders are holding the ball, or pitching it, but not if the ball is "in play".
* Why balls that hit the foul line or foul pole are fair.
* Why, if a home run bounces out of the stands and is then caught by an outfielder, it isn't an out.
* Why it isn't called a "hit" if the guy hits the ball foul. "He hit the ball, didn't he?"
I could probably go on, but you get the point. :D She just thinks some of the rules are really arbitrary. And I don't always disagree with her.

One of my favorite is why it is called the "hit-and-run" play if the baserunner starts running first? "Run-and-hit" is more accurate.
