The Giants signed Conner Gillaspie a few weeks ago. Gillaspie is a third baseman out of Wichita State. The Bear and I discussed him briefly in the Ask McCovey thread. As I read his scouting report it said that his lack of power makes it hard to "profile". I'm not sure what the means. I guess that means it's hard to predict what kind of player he will become in the majors. His main strength is that he is a "pure" hitter, always has been. I heard Gillaspie speak on KNBR and he compared himself to Tony Gwynn in style. Those are pretty bold words from a 21 year old just starting out in pro ball. I've seen a few video clips of him and he seems to have a nice slightly uppercut swing. He's listed at 6'1" and 190 lbs. Is there any reason he couldn't develop some 20-30 HR power? Here is his scouting report from minorleaguebaseball.com. He's played four games so far in the Arizona Rookie League, hitting .316.

It would be sweet if he morphed into a Wade Boggs, another lightly regarded "pure" hitting third baseman prospect! Boggs was so lightly regarded that he didn't reach the majors until he was 24 years old.

3B - lack of power. Ugh.

Wade Boggs didn't have much power and he did ok at third base. We can't all have Mike Schmidt at third base. :p

I want Mike Schmidt. Wade Boggs is clearly an exception to the rule.
In fact I'd even settle for Jimmy Ray Hart. ;)

Shoot, Bill Madlock would be an upgrade on the '08 Giants. :D

Gillaspie was assigned to the Salem-Keizer (WA) Volcanos of the Class A short season Northwest League. He played his first game on August 16th. He's 1 for 10 in three games so far.

1 for 10 is not good at all. This does not sound very good to me. Lets hope he is better than this.

Bear, it's just three games. Let's give the kid at least 100 ABs before we can make any assessments. I'm not worried.

Mike Schmidt is one of the Bear's all-time favorites! He is my kind of player and is a stand up guy.:beerbang:

Michael Jack Schmidt was one of my all time favorites as a kid growing up in the late 1970s! :agreed:

Now you see it's easy to agree with the Bear if your name is not SF Kid!:rotf:

Anyway, back to Conner Gallispie. I'm interested to see how he develops. I don't understand why some say he'll never develop power. We have no idea in what manner he could develop as a player. Now, he doesn't have to develop 40 HR power to be helpful. I'd take 25-30 HR with a .320 BA and perhaps 40 doubles. With good defense that would make for a valuable third baseman.

Yes I would take eight of those right now thank you!

Gillaspie was moved up to the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Short season Northwest League) on August 16th. In 10 games so far:
(9 for 40) .225/.262/.250, 0 HR, 1 double, 2 R, 2 BB, 8 K
Not exactly a great start. :o
