SAN FRANCISCO -- Like he has done all season, Giants infielder Kevin Frandsen sat in front of his locker before Friday's game watching the rest of his teammates get ready to play, but on this day he was a bit more optimistic, having just finished taking infield for the first time in four months.

Frandsen, who tore his left Achilles tendon during Spring Training, took ground balls at second base for the first time since the injury and finished his pregame workout with a solid round of batting practice. The always upbeat San Jose native said he was still hopeful to play this season, although the Giants are a bit more skeptical.

"I'm open to play at least a little bit this year; I mean, I think that's everybody's goal, to play," Frandsen said. "I'm hoping to play somewhere this year. Right now, I'm just doing my thing with the team and hoping to play a little bit at the end of the season."

For Frandsen, the rehabilitation period has been as grueling as expected, but the second baseman said he is six weeks ahead of schedule and felt great taking infield prior to the game.

"I felt great. I mean everything feels great, I'm having no problems moving around," Frandsen said. "That was the first time, so everything felt good."

Frandsen, who lost his starting job to Ray Durham in Spring Training and struggled when he was moved to shortstop after Omar Vizquel's knee injury, said he has been contemplating playing winter ball in the offseason.

Last season, Frandsen hit .269 with 12 doubles, one triple and 31 RBIs in 109 games. He came into the 2008 season as a viable option at second base but struggled early in Spring Training. Now with his season marred by the injury, Frandsen is looking to get healthy and come into the 2009 season at 100 percent.

"The main thing in rehab is to get to Spring Training at 100 percent," Frandsen. "A lot of it is mind over matter and hopefully everything keeps going well. I have to take everything day-to-day and attack each goal individually."

Giants manager Bruce Bochy was less optimistic about Frandsen making it back on the field for the Giants this season. Bochy, who hinted that Frandsen could possibly play in the Giants' instructional league, said the team is looking to take its time with Frandsen and they do not want to rush him back.

Despite his optimistic attitude, Frandsen also knows that his chances of playing this season at the Major League level are slim, but he said he's going to continue to push the envelope and hope for the best.

"I've been very fortunate to this day and I'm going to continue to take it one day at a time," Frandsen said. "No one has given me a timetable, so I'm going to keep at it and hope for the best."

Do you see Frandsen playing as a regular for the Giants, and if so where?

I am just not sure anymore!:(
