Friday, August 8 AT&T Park | 7:15 PM PT

Brad Penny, RHP (5-9, 5.88) Dodgers (57-57) @ Barry Zito, LHP (6-13, 5.40) Giants (48-65)

Scouting Report:

Dodgers: Dodgers: Penny is scheduled to return from the disabled list to make his first start since June 14, after which he went on the disabled list with a sore right shoulder. The big right-hander came away fine from Saturday's Minor League rehab stint with Triple-A Las Vegas in which he allowed four runs on six hits, reaching 98 mph with his fastball. Manager Joe Torre said Penny could throw around 90 pitches in this outing. Penny had lost seven straight decisions before being placed on the DL, going winless since May 2.

Giants: Zito looked like the Zito of old in his last start against the San Diego Padres on August 2, going eight shutout innings while allowing only three hits and giving up four walks while striking out five. Zito threw 116 pitches and outdueled the Padresʼ Jake Peavy in a battle of former Cy Young Award winners. It was a game that showed that Zito could still be the Cy Young Award-winning Zito and not the Zito who is currently 6-13 on the season. He pitched out of jams and didn't allow the Padres to get into any sort of offensive rhythm.

Saturday, August 9 AT&T Park | 6:05 PM PT

Hiroki Kuroda, RHP (6-8, 4.21) Dodgers (57-57) @ Kevin Correia, RHP (2-6, 5.53) Giants (48-65)

Scouting Report:

Dodgers: Kuroda rebounded after three consecutive poor starts coming out of the All-Star break to beat the Diamondbacks, although it didn't hurt to have the buzz of Manny Ramirez's first game as a Dodger for inspiration. Still, he allowed only one run on four hits in 7 1/3 innings with six strikeouts and no walks. He was able to finish off breaking balls, which was a problem in the three previous starts.

Giants: Correia was solid in his last outing against the Padres on August 3, going 6 1/3 innings allowing two runs on three hits with four walks and two strikeouts but ending up with a loss. The walks came back to bite him, as two of his walks were in a second inning that saw the Padres cross their first run across the plate. Two more walks loaded the bases for the Padres' second run of the game and the last run against Correia. Minus the walks, the game might have been different, as he continued to hold his own in a matchup that put him up against future Hall of Famer Greg Maddux.

Sunday, August 10 AT&T Park | 1:05 PM PT

Chad Billingsley, RHP (11-9, 3.01) Dodgers (57-57) @ Matt Cain, RHP (7-9, 3.60) Giants (48-65)

Scouting Report:

Dodgers: There was nothing wrong with Billingsley's follow-up to his first shutout as he pitched five strong innings in St. Louis, but two rain delays shortened his outing. He was charged with one run and struck out six without a walk. He lowered his ERA t0 3.01, lowest among Dodgers starters.

Giants: It's safe to say Cain is on a roll following a bumpy June and early July. In his past three starts, the righty has limited opponents to one run or less, including his win against the Braves in his last outing. In 6 2/3 innings, Cain allowed a lone run despite walking five -- he hadn't issued a free pass in his previous two starts. He attacked batters with his over-powering fastball, notching his seventh win, matching his 2007 total.

With Manny being a Dodger now this will be a very tough series for the Giants. I see the Giants only getting 1 out of 3 from the Dodgers with a slight hope for a 2nd win! Lets all hope I am wrong!

Manny has been white hot since he joined the Dodgers. He alone makes the Dodgers the best team in the N.L. West.

Today on the way to work I was listening to KNBR and Gary Radnisch. Gary was pontificating that he thought Manny was the best right handed hitters of his era, better than Albert Pujols. Sorry, Gary, you're wrong. As great as Manny has been, Pujols has been a tad better. Pujols is yet to have an "off" season. Every year he hits for BA, hits for power, plays good defense and is a smart, if a bit slow, baserunner. If Pujols had some good speed he'd be the perfect ballplayer.

Yes Zito is back, and the Bear was gone. I left after the top of the 3rd when Zipo gave up 5 earned runs to the Dodgers. It look like he was pitching batting practice. Giants lose 6-2, and look like a team 18 games below .500.

Giants win in 10 innings lead by Dave Roberts who was 3 for 3 and Rowand who drove in the winning run. Roberts also scored 2 of the 3 Giants runs. Also at the game was #25 Barry Bonds who appeared to be Mr. Happy and who got a warm welcome from the fans. Good win for the G men.

I saw Barry on ESPN News...it was good to see him show up.

I wonder what the hell he was babbling about when he called out Joe Torre. Something about ``I beat you before Torre and I'l ldi it again". Huh?

Looks like the Bear isn't so good at picking games to go to. He goes to see the great Zito but fails to show up to see Bonds? Did the Bear get his Barrys mixed up. :pound:

I believe Barry was referring to the 3-run homer he hit off of Ted Lilly's 1-1 pitch in the top of the first inning at Yankee Stadium on Saturday June 8th, 2002.

The Giants went on to win that game 4-3 on Alfonso Sorianos' ground ball error off the bat of Benito Santiago in the top of the 9th inning that scored Rich Aurilia from 3rd base after being issued a walk on a 3-2 pitch from the Yankees usually efficient closer Mariano Rivera, who also gave up the 2-out single to Jeff Kent that moved Aurilia over to 3rd.

Barry definitely made his presence felt in New York City that day, adding a leadoff single in the 5th inning.

Bonds also played a big part in helping the Giants defeat the Yankees again just last year at home in San Francisco on Saturday June 23rd first by singleing off of Chien-Ming Wang in the 6th inning to drive in Randy Winn to bring the Giants within 2 runs 4-2.

Then in the 7th inning after giving up a 1 out home run to Pedro Feliz, a single to Omar Visquel, a walk to Dave Roberts, an RBI single to Randy Winn scoring Visquel,, another walk, this tinme to Ray Durham, Wang walked his 3rd batter of the inning, Barry Bonds, forcing in Roberts with the go ahead run, to give the Giants a 5-4 lead.

Nate Schierhotlz was the hero of the game though, with his walk-off single to centerfield off of Scott Proctor that scored Ryan Klesko, who had singled to lead of the bottom of the 13th inning, with the winning run, giving the Giants a hard fought 6-5 victory over Joe Torre's Bronx Bombers.

Barry remembered, I remembered, and I'm sure Joe remembers too.

Cheers!
