As I look around at other players on other teams I think would make a nice fit with the Giants I keep coming back to Clint Barmes of the Rockies. Do any of you guys think he would help us, and do you think it would be possible to get him? I know the Giants like their young players at SS & 2B, but he may be an upgrade, and I know he would be an upgrade at 3B. Remember he is not yet 30 years old so he has a lot of years left.

Barmes is a poor hitter. Coors Field hides that. Here are his H/R splits in '08.

Home: .354/.396/.667
Road: .244/.271/.333

His slugging percentage is literally twice as high at Coors Field. That's insane!

For his career:

Home: .296/.338/.470
Road: .225/.263/.331

Pretty much Barmes sucks as a hitter. The Giants have plenty of sucky hitters. They don't need another one. :)

Don't you think is stats reflect the way he has been used by the Rockies? I do. I guess we will just have to agree to disagree.

Why? How is he used that would alter the stats? I really don't know so I'm asking.

Since he was injured a few years ago when he was the starting shortstop the Rockies found the wiz-kid Troy Tulo., and Barmes has been odd man out. He has been up and down in the minors, and he has not had a regular position in years. The Rockies have refused to trade him so he is just stuck. Its ashame!

That's a good question. However his splits are so extreme. A career .225 road BA is a real negative mark for Barmes. And that .225 BA has come in 664 plate appearances.

Yes, but most of those plate appearences came at the beginning of his career when he was just a Kid trying to make it at a very tough position (shortstop). Now I am not saying he is the second coming of Honus Wagner, but I think he is worth a shot. Its ok if you don't, but I still do.

According to his bio the most playing time he got was in '06, his fourth major league season. He had 535 PAs and hit .220 overall. He's having his best season by far in '08 but that is being driven by his huge home stats.

I just think if he came to the Giants he's be a .230 hitter. And he's not known for great defense is he?

I am not sure, what are his fielding stats? He has looked good in th field every time I have seen him.

I still don't understand why his stats are the way they are because of "the way he was used"...WTF has that got to do with it? Please explain.

When you are young and you have lost your starting position because of injury you may be unhappy when you don't get a shot at playing when you are healthy. This may have an effect on your hitting because you are pissed you lost your job. Example a guy plays firstbase and hits 12 HR's in a season. The next year a new player comes along who hits 35 HR's and the guy who played last year is only used as a hitter off the bench and spot starts. Do you think that might effect how he hits?

Thank you.

I'm not sure. If yo can hit you can hit. Doesn't sound like this cat is a very good hitter if you ask me. All that stuff sounds kind of like excuses. Dunno.

I don't really know. I haven't really given it much thought, really.

You're full of something if you ask me. What, the guy sat on the bench and forgot how to hit? Yeah riiiiiiight.
