Kevin Correia, RHP (1-5, 5.71) Giants (43-61) @ Hiroki Kuroda, RHP (5-7, 3.98) Dodgers (52-52)
Scouting Report:
Giants: Correia emerged with a no-decision from his last outing against Washington, although he blanked the Nationals for four innings. He yielded an unearned run in the fifth before crumbling in the sixth, when he allowed three runs. The one big inning has been Correia's undoing for much of the season. Still, he called this game one of his best of the year, particularly since it followed a 3 2/3-inning, seven-run effort at Chicago.
Dodgers: Kuroda had another wobbly beginning, following up his two-inning start in Arizona by allowing five runs over the first three innings at Coors Field. As bad as it sounds, he was victimized by some flukey hits and he stopped the damage there, finishing up with three scoreless innings. This start against the Giants should indicate which is the real Kuroda.
Tuesday, July 29 Dodger Stadium | 7:10 PM PT
Matt Cain, RHP (6-8, 3.82) Giants (43-61) @ Jason Johnson, RHP (0-0, 2.57)
Dodgers (52-52)
Scouting Report:
Giants: Cain will be hard-pressed to duplicate his previous outing, a four-hit shutout against Washington. He fashioned his gem largely by issuing no walks for only the third start of his career. Cain has never beaten the Dodgers, posting an 0-4 record against them with a 5.30 ERA lifetime. This year, he pitched 5 2/3 innings at Dodger Stadium in an April 1 no-decision before losing to L.A. on July 6, when he surrendered five runs and eight hits in six innings.
Dodgers: Johnson will make his first start with the Dodgers after allowing two runs in seven innings in two long-relief outings since being called up after the All-Star break. He was originally supposed to start July 22 against the Rockies before the Dodgers called up rookie Clayton Kershaw from Double-A. Johnson, who pitches with an insulin pump, has started 214 Major League games and gone 55-98 with a 4.98 in his career, earning a reputation as an innings eater. He may get a second start on Sunday but will likely be bumped when Brad Penny returns to the rotation, which could happen as early as Aug. 5.
Wednesday, July 30 Dodger Stadium | 7:10 PM PT
Jonathan Sanchez, LHP (8-6, 4.46) Giants (43-61) @ Chad Billingsley, RHP (10-9, 3.26) Dodgers (52-52)
Scouting Report:
Giants: In the second inning of his last start, Sanchez allowed more runs (five) than he previously surrendered in any game since June 12. Following a quick first frame, the lefty walked two, gave up a single and three doubles in the second. He was pulled in the third after throwing 81 pitches (46 strikes). Sanchez's breaking ball wasn't breaking, and, alas, he tallied just two strikeouts
Dodgers: Billingsley provided a much-needed quality start for his club on Friday, surrendering just two runs on five hits and three walks, while notching four strikeouts in 7 2/3 innings against the Nationals. In the process, he improved his record to 10-9.
Looks like 1 out of 3, but one can hope for 2 out of 3!;)
