Tuesday, July 22 AT&T Park | 7:15 PM PT

Jason Bergmann, RHP (1-6, 4.03) Nationals (38-61) @ Barry Zito, LHP (4-12, 5.62) Giants (40-58)

Scouting Report:

Nationals: Bergmann pitched nearly lights-out for seven innings Thursday against Arizona. The right-hander didn't even allow a hit until the fourth, and he surrendered just two runs over the outing. He struck out three in his fifth straight quality start but picked up a no-decision, as the Nationals fell, 7-5, in the 11th after rallying from two down in the ninth and three down in the 10th.

Giants: Zito technically didn't record a "quality start" when he faced Washington on June 8, but he still recorded a victory on a sweltering afternoon, interrupting his season-opening skid of nine loss in 10 decisions. Zito worked five innings that day, surrendering three runs and seven hits while walking four and striking out two. Zito trailed 3-0 in that game before the Giants rallied for four runs in the fifth.

Wednesday, July 23 AT&T Park | 7:15 PM PT

Collin Balester, RHP (1-2, 5.87) Nationals (38-61) @ Kevin Correia, RHP (1-5, 5.81) Giants (40-58)

Scouting Report:

Nationals: Balester found the going rough in his third career outing, lasting just 4 2/3 innings and surrendering six runs, though just four were earned. The young right-hander struggled to keep runners off the basepaths against Houston, allowing 11 hits over his short outing. He exited in the fifth with the bases loaded, but Jesus Colome struck out Miguel Tejada to end the inning.

Giants: Correia has had a long time to contemplate what he called one of his worst outings in a long time. He yielded seven runs and nine hits in 3 2/3 innings on July 12 at Chicago. Correia confessed that he didn't feel right from the game's first pitch, and it showed. "When I've had my chances to turn an outing into a good one, I'm not making the pitches," Correia said after facing the Cubs. He owns a 1-1 record with a 2.55 ERA in eight career appearances against Washington.

Thursday, July 24 AT&T Park | 12:45 PM PT

Tim Redding, RHP (7-4, 4.17) Nationals (38-61)@ Matt Cain, RHP (5-8, 4.08)
Giants (40-58)

Scouting Report:

Nationals: Redding was chased after allowing six runs on six hits in four innings Friday against the Braves, taking his first loss since May 9. Since then, the right-hander had nine no-decisions and a win, when he tossed six scoreless innings against the Astros on July 10 in his final start before the All-Star break. He said he wasn't rusty Friday, and threw a bullpen session earlier in the week to prepare for the start. His command with his fastball was good, but he missed his location with two offspeed pitches that cost him five runs. Redding is 0-4 with a 6.49 ERA in seven career games (five starts) against the Giants.

Giants: Cain pitched capably in his previous start -- six innings, three earned runs -- but he walked as many (five) as he struck out. Through the season, the righty's problems have revolved around his control. He's walked at least three batters in his past four starts and occasionally struggles keeping the ball down in the zone. Because of his location issues, Cain needed 110 pitches in his last outing -- nearly 20 per inning.

The Bear is hoping for 2 out of 3! :beerbang:

Giants win 6-3 over the Nationals. Molina goes for 2 HR's and Lewis 1 HR! Zito gets his 5th win and is now 5-12.

ZITO WINS!

Let's hope we give Cain 5 runs to play with. Go G-men!

Yo, the Giants finally scored a run for Matt Cain in the 8th inning! Hopefully, Cain gets the complete game shutout! Go Matt go!! :beerbang:

Yes, the Giants win 1-0! Cain gets the complete game four-hit shutout! I'm glad Bochy left Cain in the game after Cain allowed a single and a double with one out. The kid showed some mental toughness working out of that jam. :beerbang:

Long live the Matt Cain era! :woot:

One of the five best games I have seen in the last 3 years. Cain pitched very well indeed. No only did he have mental toughness he also kept his pitched count down. His control was good today also as he seldom threw a pitch over 92 MPH. And when he had a bad call he did not let it get to him. It is like a new Cain, and I like this one!!:beerbang::sweep::yes:

I think if Lincecum can win 20 games, lead the league in strikeouts, and keep his ERA in the 2.60-2.70 range he has a great shot to win the CY Young Award. but he didn't look good in his last start.

Duplicating his first half numbers on THIS team is almost impossible.

Let's face it he's not THAT good.

Keep dancing with your man love for Lincecum. Sad but the flimsy ass kid won't make a big mark in the majors. He'll break down sooner than any of us want to believe. Matt Cain IS the future of the Giants pitching staff. You're just going to have to accept and live with that fact.

Trading Cain would be complete stupidity on Sabean's part. I would never support such a trade. Cain is one of the Giants key building blocks for a future championship team.

Come on guys this doesn't have to be an either/or. We can love BOTH Cain and Lincecum. Obviously, Lincecum is having a wonderful year. And Cain is capable of pitching at the level that Lincecum has this year. If fact Cain has had long stretches he where he has. Form what I read about Lincecum's unique pitching motion puts very little stress on his arm and shoulder. Biomechanical experts who study such things had stated as such.

It is not an either/or deal. It is a great problem to have two great pitchers to choose from and I am sure other teams would like the same problem. However if I had to choose it would be Tim every time. Also I don't want to trade Cain but if a team offered me two young position super stars I would listen and so would any GM worth his salt

I doubt any team offer two young position superstars for Matt Cain. They may offer one superstar but not two.

It is not an either/or deal. It is a great problem to have two great pitchers to choose from and I am sure other teams would like the same problem. But it is YOU who want to put Cain in relief (or trade him) as some sort of knee jerk reaction to him not being in the Cy Young race. Get a grip. :p

It seems you left out parts of my statement to suit your case which is just plain stupid! IMO Cain is not as good as Big Tim! If I was offered a Super Star position player who fit the Giants needs I would trade Cain in a second. Short of that he makes a fine #3 starter in the Giants rotation.:yes::clap:

Short of that he makes a fine #3 starter in the Giants rotation. And then you'd complain for months that the Giants need a young arm and have no pitching. Where you gonna get a young talent after you piss away one like Cain? Maybe off an apple tree? No, this kind of talent doesn't grow on trees... Dumb.

Neither do Super Star Position Players! He is a solid #3 and if the right trade comes along I would do it. If not you still have a #3 for your rotation. What's so hard to understand?:shakehead:

Another flaw in the Bears coaching and player evaluation process...

Sanchez who the Bear THINKS is a #2 pitcher was just lit up for another 5 ERs...Yeah trade Cain and leave the pitching staff with one guy they can count on in the starting rotation. Smart. Very smart.

Make that 6 ER in 2 2/3 innings... ugh.

• Lincecum
• Cain
• Sanchez
• ?????

Seems it always something with our Giants -- either bad pitching or bad hitting or both. Damn it.
