This has to be one of the nuttiest stats of the year: Since May 20, the Giants have the best record in the National League West — at 23-26. At 40-55, they are on pace to lose 93 games, or two more than last year. Yet they stand seven games out of first place.

All of this creates an interesting dynamic for the second half. The Giants really should be thinking about 2009, assessing their young talent and phasing out the old guard. But what if part of the old guard, Rich Aurilia, was one of the more consistent hitters in the first half? The Giants cannot be called a good team, but they might be good enough to challenge for a division title. The players are just as curious as the fans about the direction they will travel over the final 2½ months of what has been an interesting start to the post-Barry Bonds era.

"The second half is really where the strong teams start getting stronger and the weak teams start getting weaker," shortstop Omar Vizquel said. "Teams want to see their prospects, and the stronger teams get the best players from other teams and start separating. It will be interesting what the next move will be here."

The Bear has been fearing this attitude. Now the Giants might believe they are a playoff team, and forget the rebuilding process!:nono:

The Giants obviously should build for the future. And let's not kid ourselves the young position players they do have are not high ceiling, future superstar type of young players. They all have flaws or shortcoming in their game. So the Giants need to work on getting that big time big power hitting threat in the lineup. And that's not going to be easy.

They have many solid support players (journeyman), but the still need 1-3 star position players with some pop, and speed!:twocents:

For sure. This goes back to the Giants draft strategy. It sucks. Let's see how this Posey kid pans out?

Sure I believe we should build for the future, but at the same time let's not try and do it across the board at every pos.!!! Stud CF, C, Winn's doing good, and Lewis is looking good in Left. I don't see whats wrong with Seeking out a Power hitter at 3rd or 1st and bringing up some young blood at the same time, while also getting rid of some OLD timers(Aurillia, Roberts).
It was horrible watching us turn into senior citizens all over the place, but let's not go straight to toddlers. We can acquire someone young and good through a trade or in the offseason (Free agency) to help re-shape/re-build this team!!!

seanyt, good to see you back posting. We all hope to see more of you. I agree you can't remake a team over all at once. However you have to be open to moving anyone if the right offer comes along. So far I think the Giants are doing a good (not great) job this season. How it plays out only time will tell.;)

I like the idea of playing the young kids. This season is in the dumper. The Giants are 9 games out of first place in a horrible division. This is as good a time as ever to play the young guys and get a real feel for what we have and what we need to do in the off season to get more competitive in '09. Signing more aging vets at this stage is not my idea of a good move. Yeah on balance I think the Giants are doing ok with the plan they seem to have working.

As for Manny...forget it. Exact;ly the kind of cancer we don't need. I know he can hit but that dude isn't going to do the Giants any good.

Also, Many is clearing in the decline phase of his career. His power continues to go down. Sure, a declining Manny is still a good hitter but his contract is huge and he's going to continue to decline, not get better. The .325, 40 HR, 140 RBI, 120 R, hitting Manny is gone never to return.

And now Manny is a Dodger. Let's see what he brings to the team down south.

Let's hope Manny destroys the Dodger clubhouse. But he's a FA after the season so he likely won't be with the Dodgers next year once they get first hand experience with that clown's attitude.

Manny will be a model player for the rest of the year! Its after who ever signs him long term the fireworks begin. I hope it's the Dodgers.
