Monday, June 30 AT&T Park | 7:15 PM PT
Ted Lilly, LHP (8-5, 4.74) Cubs (49-32) @ Barry Zito, LHP (3-11, 5.91)
Giants (36-46)
Scouting Report:
Cubs: Lilly is coming off a win over the Orioles in which he gave up four runs on five hits and two walks over seven innings. All the runs came on a pair of two-run homers by Jay Payton. Lilly is still struggling to keep the ball in the park -- and when the wind is blowing out at Wrigley, it doesn't help. AT&T Park should be a better fit. Lilly is 2-1 with a 6.08 ERA lifetime against the Giants.
Giants: After posting a 1-3 record in his first four June starts, Zito flashed his 2002 AL Cy Young form on Wednesday at Cleveland, surrendering one run and four hits in a season-high 6 2/3 innings as the Giants prevailed, 4-1. Zito's employing a slightly lower arm slot and using a two-seam fastball to his advantage. Zito was 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA in two starts against Chicago last year. But he has struggled at AT&T Park, where he's 0-7 with a 7.34 ERA.
Tuesday, July 1 AT&T Park | 7:15 PM PT
Jason Marquis, RHP (6-4, 4.96) Cubs (49-32) @ Matt Cain, RHP (4-6, 4.44) Giants (36-46)
Scouting Report:
Cubs: The Orioles made sure Marquis wouldn't go 5-0 for June his last time out, shelling him for seven runs in four innings. He had been stellar previously, outdueling Brad Penny, Roy Halladay and Jose Contreras in consecutive outings. The start was Marquis' shortest of the season and his first loss since May 13. Marquis is 3-0 with a 2.56 lifetime against the Giants.
Giants: Cain struggled in his last outing, allowing four runs and eight hits in five innings at Cleveland. That interrupted a three-game stretch in which he was 2-1 with a 2.95 ERA, 25 strikeouts and only three walks in 21 1/3 innings. Cain's appearances against the Cubs conjure an indelible memory: On Sept. 9, 2005, he became the youngest Giant in the franchise's San Francisco history to throw a complete game when he beat Chicago with a two-hitter. Cain finished 1-1 with a 5.73 ERA in two starts against the Cubs last year.
Wednesday, July 2 AT&T Park | 7:15 PM PT
Ryan Dempster, RHP (9-3, 3.26) Cubs (49-32) @ Kevin Correia, RHP (1-5, 4.79) Giants (36-46)
Scouting Report:
Cubs: Dempster is still looking for that first road win. He's 9-0 at Wrigley, and 0-3 in seven starts on the road. His last outing against the White Sox was the first time he'd been roughed up. The right-hander gave up eight runs on seven hits and three walks in 2 1/3 innings, his shortest outing of the season. The problem was that he couldn't get away with any mistakes.
Giants: A solid five innings of work weren't enough to net Correia a victory in last appearance. Against the cross-bay rival Athletics, Correia allowed just one run and four hits, but his pitch count (102) was high and he was pulled before the sixth in a tie game. After missing more than six weeks with a strained muscle in his left side, Correia has been healthy for his last three turns in the rotation. He has improved in each of those appearances, allowing five, three and one run, respectively.
Thursday, July 3 AT&T Park | 4:05 PM PT
Sean Gallagher, RHP (3-3, 4.36) Cubs (49-32) @ Tim Lincecum, RHP (9-1, 2.38) (36-46)
Scouting Report:
Cubs: Gallagher did not get a decision in his last outing against the White Sox, but learned some valuable lessons. The right-hander gave up five runs on eight hits and three walks over six innings, and matched a season high with eight strikeouts. He also threw a season-high 121 pitches. He got an earful from Lou Piniella in the second inning, and settled down. He escaped a tough jam in the fifth when the Sox had two on and one out, and struck out the next two batters. He's still going through growing pains.
I would be happy with a split but I would not be upset if they found a way for a series win.:beerbang:
