This thread is to track the 2008 Agusta GreenJackets, the Giant's lower single-A team. Giants' super prospect, Angel Villalona, is on this team.
Angel Villalona, a name all Giant fans should know. He is one of a few that carry the tag "The Giants Future"!

Never head of the guy. :o
I'm out of the loop unfortunately.

All kidding aside Kid this guy is a teenager the Giants gave millions to when he signed at I think 15. He is 17 looks like he is 25 and hits the cover off the ball. They have hopes of him playing first base in the near future for the major league club. Follow this guy if he is the only minor leaguer you follow. :beerbang:

I hope the guy is the next Stretch McCovey. That would make Dutch errr...McCovey happy. :)
The Giants are due for some good news from the farm system.

Villalona is off to a slow start in '08.
.234 BA (11 for 47), .383 SLG, 1 HR, 8 RBI, 5 R, 4 doubles, 4 BB, 13 K
But, I'm not worried yet. He's only 17 years old and is playing against much older players. I haven't checked but I wouldn't be surprised if he is the youngest player in the league.

Ok now, let's not get carried away. Villalona could be a great player. But Big Mac was one of the greatest first basmen of all time. Let's just wait until Villalona simply reaches the majors. But even if he were just 65% as good as Stetch I would be happy with that!

I'm not too worried yet since he his only 17 years old. Hopefully, he'll get it going soon, though.

Another prospect, 20 year old Thomas Neal, is off to a good start.
.328/.382/.721 (20 for 61), 6 HR, 14 RBI, 20 R, 4 doubles, 6 BB, 16 Ks
If he keeps going like this he'll be moved up to the San Jose Giants in the near future.

Sorry about that! I should have mentioned that, huh? I'm a newbie at this scouting gig. :D . Neal is a first baseman. He throws and hits right handed, height is 6'1", weighs 205 and was born on 08/17/1987. Wow, he was born on my 19th birthday. :beerbang:
Wow, he is only 22. I like that.

Angel Villalona's struggles continue. He's hitting .200/.258/.306, 1 HR, 9 RBI, 6 R, 6 BB, 24 Ks. I wonder if the kid is simply overmatched against the older players?

MIAMI — As the Giants complete preparations for the June 5 draft, it's worth noting that last year's top pick is doing just fine.
Left-hander Madison Bumgarner, the 10th overall selection in 2007, has allowed only one earned run over his past 311/3 innings for Single-A Augusta.
Overall, he is 5-2 with a 2.18 ERA while striking out 9.9 batters per nine innings.
"Anytime you're the first player taken in the organization, there are obviously going to be some expectations with that,'' manager Andy Skeels told the Augusta Chronicle over the weekend. "He has handled it better than we could have hoped for."
Taken out of South Caldwell (N.C.) High School, Bumgarner has looked dominating over 451/3 innings with 50 strikeouts against nine walks. Opponents are batting .222 against him.
The 6-foot-4 left-hander threw a career-high 61/3 innings against Charleston on Saturday without allowing a runner past first base.
The Giants have the fifth overall pick this year, their highest spot since taking Jason Grilli fourth in 1997.
I like this kid, but then what's not to like?;)

Angel Villalona has shown some improvement over the past few weeks. He's now at:
.234/.287/.407, 6 HR, 22 RBI, 18 R, 11 doubles, 10 BB, 43 Ks
In April he hit .213 with 1 HR. In May he's hitting .253 so far with 5 HRs.

It's been long time for an update on the Giants's top prosepct, Angel Villalona. After a slow April has has gotten better every month. As of today he's at
.248/.298/.412, 11 HR, 41 RBI, 45 runs, 15 BB, 86 Ks
Not that line doesn't look so good but he had an awful April, hitting .213/.273/.325. Ouch. So far in July he's hitting .284/.314/.403. My major concern is his gawd-awful BB/K ratio (15/86). He's the typical Latin prospect, very aggressive doesn't like to take walks. Latin ballplayers are typically players that don't get 100 walks in a season and Villalona may be such a player. However, Villalona is VERY young, he doesn't turn 18 until next month. Without looking it up I suspect he is the youngest player in the South Atlantic League. I think Villalona will repeat this league again in '09 or at least start the '09 season with Augusta. I hope he shows marked improvement over the second half of the '08 season.
My guess is if he stays just like he is today, and shows little improvement the second half he will repeat this season again at least till mid year. If he shows continued improvement the second half of this season look for him to move up at the beginning of next year.;)

I was looking at Villalona's stats and I saw something that I didn't notice until today. Villalona bats right handed and he is being killed by right hand pitching. Here are his splits so far.
vs LHP: 31 for 90, .344/.381/.622, 4 HR, 14 RBI, 18 R, 14 doubles
vs RHP: 53 for 242, .219/.272/.351, 8 HR, 29 RBI, 29 R, 8 doubles
His hitting against right hand pitching is just terrible. Since I haven't seen him actually hit (I'm trying to find video) I have no idea why he is struggling so much against right handers.

From the look of his stats it shows he is a free swinger from the right side. He has much more power and RBI production from the right side. It all seems youth related and with a few more years playing it will work its way out.

Bear,
I'm not sure what you mean. It sounds like you are saying Villalona is a switch hitter. Villalona is not a switch hitter. He's a right hand hitter and he struggles against right hand pitching. Since he faces mostly right hand pitching that is major problem.

You are correct that I thought he was a switch hitter. Now that I know better it sounds like he likes the middle of the plate in and not the middle out. Also some hitters pick up pitchers from the left or right side better. And the last thing is when did he have his eyes last checked? I know it sounds stupid but teams go for a long time till someone brings that up.

No, that's a good idea. It could be that one eye is far more dominant than the other. I do think a major factor is Villlona's age. He isn't even 18 yet so he has limited experience facing top notch right hand pitching. I wonder if he is getting lots of pitches low and away?

I think it is a combination of the two. Age, and a hole in his swing on the outside part of the plate. Time should correct both problems. ;)

Ok, Villalona is doing ok. For the season he's at
107 for 421, .254/.302/.416, 14 HR, 26 doubles, 56 RBI, 57 R, 18 BB, 112 Ks.
Since the All-Star breat he's hitting .274/.313/.420
The positives
His 14 HR and 26 doubles shows good power considering he just turned 18 on 8/13. He has shown improvement in his batting average as the season has progressed.
.213 April
.250 May
.250 June
.279 July
.279 August
He pounds left hand pitching to the tune of .321/.353/.569.
The negatives
He has just 18 walks with 112 strikeouts. That is simply horrible. Like most latin ballplayers "walks" is simply not in his vocabulary. :p Villalona, a right hander, struggles against right hand pitching. He's at .231/.285/.362.
I think Villalona will repeat South Atlantic League again in '09. He simply hasn't shown enough to merit a promotion to Single-A San Jose. Hopefully with a good pring in '09 he can move to San Jose perhaps by June.

Madison Bumgarner was impressive again! In his 8/15 start he pitched 6.0 innings, with 12 Ks, 2 BBs, 2 H and got the win. He's now at
130.1 IP, 13-3 W-L, 1.52 ERA, 145 Ks, 20 BBs, 102 H
145 Ks and just 20 BBs!!! Are you freaking kidding me?!!! That's a 7.25 K/BB ratio! Why has this kid not been promoted to San Jose already?

Perhaps even by mid '09! Also, Bumgarner is 6'4" and 215 pounds which is the same size and weight as Steve Carlton.

He I like that! I bet Baseball America will rate Bumgarner as the Giants #1 prospect going into 2009 given how he's pitched in '08 and Villlona's medicore '08 season. Alderson should be rated high as well.

Villalona had a great August, easily his best month. He hit:
.308/.363/.529, 5 HR, 20 RBI, 16 R, 8 doubles, 3 BB, 20 K's
Villalona had 21 RBI in June and July combined. Those three walks are concern though. How do you go an entire month with just three walks? Bur I like how the kid has improved his BA every month.
.213- April
.250- May

.279- July

The Augusta Geenjackets are in the postseason and beat Ashville in the Game 1 of the SAL semifinals. Madison Bumgarner was outstanding again.
Bumgarner outduels Graham in opener
09/03/2008
As good as Madison Bumgarner was during the regular season, he was even better in his first playoff game as a professional. The 19-year-old left-hander struck out 10 over eight innings of three-hit ball Wednesday as the Augusta GreenJackets blanked the Asheville Tourists, 1-0, in Game 1 of their best-of-3 South Atlantic League semifinal series.
"This was probably my best game of the year," said Bumgarner, who led the league in wins, strikeouts and ERA during the regular season. "It was a perfect night. Everything was working, my slider, change and fastball."
Bumgarner (1-0) went 15-3 with a 1.46 ERA and 164 strikeouts in 24 regular-season starts en route to Pitcher of the Year honors.
"I had a little bit of nervousness before the game," he admitted. "But when I threw the first pitch, all of a sudden it all went away."
The only hits he allowed were singles to Michael Mitchell in the second and eighth and a base hit to Jeffrey Cunningham in the fourth. The North Carolina native retired the side in order five times, setting down 10 consecutive Tourists in one stretch.
"The coaches just told me to relax and stay calm, even if I gave up some runs," he said. "Luckily, it didn't come to that."
Andrew De La Garza closed it out in the ninth, allowing a hit and striking out two, for the save.
"I threw 89 pitches and felt great," Bumgarner said. "But we had a fresh guy ready to go."
Bumgarner's counterpart, Connor Graham (0-1), may have been even better. He gave up just one hit -- a single in the fifth by Angel Villalona -- over eight frames. He was charged with an unearned run, walked two and struck out 10.
The GreenJackets' scored the game's only run in the sixth without getting a hit. James Simmons walked, Andrew Davis reached on Graham's throwing error and Shane Jordan walked to load the bases. Nick Noonan followed with a sacrifice fly to left.
Augusta, which coasted to the second-half Southern Division title, snapped a three-game postseason losing streak that dated to 2006.
