SAN FRANCISCO -- After tossing 3 1/3 shutout innings in his first rehabilitation start for Class A San Jose on Friday, right-hander Kevin Correia was in the Giants dugout before Saturday afternoon's game, and he spoke about his potential return to the active roster.
Correia, who landed on the 15-day disabled list on April 27 because of a strained muscle in his left side, said his oblique wasn't bothering him at all. Correia allowed just one hit and one walk in his appearance while using all of his normal pitches. He'll make another start for Fresno on Tuesday.
"I think it's pretty much ready," Correia said, before adding that he still had to get "my pitch count up."
The right-hander said Friday's start was the first time he'd pitched without thinking about the injury, even though it is still in the healing process.
San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy said he wants Correia to pitch "at least 60-70 pitches" before he returns to the club, but, "if all goes well," he'll be up soon enough.
Correia likely would take Pat Misch's place in the starting rotation. Before his Saturday afternoon start, Misch was winless in six appearances in 2008 with a 6.54 ERA. Misch's next turn in the rotation is Thursday, an off-day for the Giants. Bochy could therefore insert Correia into the rotation without altering any other pitchers' scheduled start dates.
Thank God , we could be seeing the end of Pat (I can't Pitch) Misch. There is a God!
