ST. LOUIS -- The Cardinals recalled outfielder Joe Mather from Triple-A Memphis and optioned outfielder Chris Duncan to Memphis. The move allows a torrid hitter to get his first taste of big league pitching, while simultaneously allowing a scuffling player to get everyday at-bats in an attempt to get sorted out.
Mather, 25, enjoyed a breakout season at Double-A Springfield last year and has followed it up by dominating the Pacific Coast League thus far in 2008. He's batting .315 with a .406 on-base percentage and .671 slugging percentage at Memphis, with 12 home runs in 143 at-bats.
Duncan, meanwhile, has struggled to find the power that previously made him a key part of the Cardinals' attack. He's batting .252 with a respectable .356 on-base percentage, but he has only nine extra-base hits -- four home runs -- in 127 at-bats. His playing time had been diminishing due to the brilliant season of Ryan Ludwick.
The Giants need to make the Cards an offer for Duncan they can't refuse!:awesomework.gif
