SAN FRANCISCO -- The Giants announced today that they have traded left-handed pitcher Ben Snyder to the Texas Rangers in exchange for left-handed pitcher Edwin Escobar, club Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian Sabean announced today.

Snyder, 24, was drafted by the Giants in the 4th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft and has gone 33-19 with a 2.98 ERA (153er, 461.2ip) with 406 strikeouts in 105 games (68 starts). He has been used as both a starter and reliever during his four seasons in the minors reaching as high as double-A last year.

Snyder was originally selected by the Baltimore Orioles from the Giants during the 2009 Rule 5 Draft last December 10. He was later acquired by the Texas Rangers as the player to be named later to complete the deal that saw right-handed pitcher Chris Ray go to the Rangers in the December 9 trade that sent right-handed pitcher Kevin Millwood to the Orioles.

Edwin Escobar, a La Buaera, VZ native, was signed by the Texas Rangers as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2008. He spent his first year in professional baseball with the Arizona Rangers, going 2-5 with a 5.00 ERA (25er, 45.0ip), striking out 48 and walking only 16. Escobar will be assigned to minor league camp.

I must be missing something here. This sounds like the Giants have just been taken to the cleaners. Can someone help me out here. I just don't get this move?:shrug:

Odd trade. Escobar is very young, still only 17, turns 18 in two weeks, so his 5.00 ERA in '09 don't mean much. I bet he's got what scouts call a "live arm". :D Trading away a 24 year old with low upside for a 17 year old with a higher upside seems like a good trade.
